Great service from Dan. Fast and professional, had it sorted the day after quoting. 100% recommend Tom Paterson, Cheshire
All items must be disconnected from water, gas and electric supplies before collection.
If you have bought a new fridge, freezer, cooker, washer, dishwasher or dryer, you’ll need to arrange to dispose of the old one. Here are some options:
Pass it on
Is your appliance still in clean, working order? You could sell it on eBay, Shpock or in the local paper. You could offer to give it away on Gumtree, Freecycle or Facebook. Don’t forget that the buyer may expect you to arrange delivery. There are some things you can ask charities to collect, but large electrical items are usually not accepted.
Throw it away
When you need to throw something away but it won’t fit in the wheelie bin, you take it to the household waste centre. You pay for this service through your council tax. If you can get the item to the tip yourself, you can dump it for free at some tips. If you can’t fit it in your car, you’ll need a van, pickup, 4x4 or trailer. Be careful because if you turn up in a van, pickup, 4x4 or use a trailer you will need a apply for a household waste permit before you arrive to prove your appliance is from a domestic property within your council area.
If you can’t get your unwanted appliance to the household recycling centre, you might be able to arrange to pay for the council to collect it from your house. Both Cheshire East and Cheshire West have a system for collecting bulky waste items but our experience is that the service is not always available when you need it. Make sure you have clarified how much it will cost, when they will come to collect it, and if there are any special rules about leaving it outside your property or collection timings.
Book a collection
If you need to arrange something a bit quicker, or at a time to suit you, an alternative to the council is to use a junk removal specialist company that collects scrap appliances.
Take care that the service you use is safe and legal. Businesses that carry waste for you are not allowed to use the council tip. Fly-tipping is illegal, attracts fines of up to £5,000, and YOU are responsible for ensuring that your waste is collected and disposed of by a licensed operator. The licence is issued by the Environment Agency and they make sure that companies dispose of junk responsibly.
Check it's all above board
Always ask to see the license before you let anyone take your junk. Because some household items such as refrigerators contain harmful gasses, we have to make an environmental surcharge for legal disposal of these items. Beware of operators not charging for this or offering to dump your rubbish on the cheap as they may not be licensed and may not dispose of the waste responsibly. Dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers don’t attract a surcharge.
